Struggling to Decide What to Eat? These Tips that Help

a bunch of food on a plate

May 29 - Written by Crystal Andino

Too many choices make it hard to decide what you want. A recent study concluded that staring at a menu and yet being unable to decide what food to order results from ‘choice overload’. The brain is overwhelmed by the number of similar choices, which makes it difficult to make a decision.

Hold up, don’t throw the menu away in frustration and ask someone else to order for you; instead, try these tips:

1. LISTEN TO YOUR GUT FEELING

Allow yourself to gravitate towards the dishes that instantly have your attention as they scroll by you at the restaurant or online in the restaurant’s photo gallery. If not, you can skim through the menu to spot ingredients you love.

But remember to always stick with the theme. There’s a reason why a restaurant only focuses on a particular type of cuisine, so if you don’t want to regret your choice, don’t order steak at a seafood restaurant.

2.  SEARCH FOR SEASONAL ITEMS

Restaurants tend to highlight the seasonal ingredients that are currently at their peak to encourage you to indulge in the particular season’s dessert selection. However, it’s unlikely to be available the next time you come around to this establishment. You can bet on a seasonal dish edging out a core disk any time of the year.

You can also try this experiment if you’re feeling adventurous!

3. GET RECOMMENDATIONS

If you fail to choose a single dish, start by selecting many and gradually eliminating options from your list. This means starting with a smaller plate, such as an appetizer, and later going in with the main course, given that you still have the capacity.

Last but not least, get the waiter’s recommendation for their best sellers; other times, they may offer half portions of dishes for you to try them all.
